FASTer FH3

So pretty much everyone says a woofer-assist is meant to take a single driver system to the next level. That's what I've done with my FH3s and I'd wholeheartedly agree.
First things first though. We'd already swapped out the CHR70s for A7.3s which was not quite an unscrew and swap procedure but almost. They're very similar in size but the latter is slightly bigger. Managed to stuff it in the hole with a bit of fudging. Not important; the outcome certainly was though. A much higher class of driver altogether, vastly more transparent.

Anyhow, I had the bits and pieces to hand for going FASTer. A couple of Dayton 10s in sealed PVC cylinders, a two- channel sub amp and an old Beveridge active crossover set at 400Hz. The sub amp can be operated as a stereo full range unit (Gallo Ref3 SA).

The system breathes much better now and can take much more volume without so much as a hint of strain (good for an old goat with tinnitus) and the A7s seem much more at ease dealing just with mids and tops. The bottom end is obviously much stronger, though perhaps not quite the sweet tonality of the BLH.

So yes, a fun upgrade, especially as it cost nothing (in that the bits were lying around idle). Will see how it sounds with a more fineessed power amp in place of the grunt at some point (I have a 100wpc LJM unit to hand).
Thanks to those who have suggested this is the best way to build a system around a tiny full range driver.

Leak III ST Refurbishing

Hi everyboady,
I have just boght a Leak Throughline 3 Stereo in pristine condition. I think I was fortunate, this is like a sleaping beauty. Outside as well as inside, no trace of human action, rust or dust. No component was replaced and valves are the original ones. My intention is restauration/refurbishing as much as can be.
So, for the beginning I had revival the PSU with low voltage as 110 volt getting 230 volt after some hours. I checked the multy section el-cap an was OK also checked some voltage poins and seamed OK also.
After providing a decent aerial and conection with my sistem (Nagra PLL preamp and DIY OTL Tim Mellow power amp) I stared listening.
The audition was much under my expectations. The sound was dull and absent of dinamic even on mono as stereo I was allready not expecting too much from the modest inside decoder.
That's why I am asking some hepl, where to start and what to do next.
By the way I own allready a nice valve decoder from Fischer, the MPX-100 which I intend to refurbish too and cope with the Leak tuner.

Thanks in advance.
Victor

Help needen with Phonic PWA2200 Power Amplifier

Hi, I have a Phonic PWA2200 power amplifier which needs repairs. Unfortunately there are no qualified technicians in my locality so i'm trying to repair it myself with the little electronics knowledge I have... So i really need help in fixing it.
So here's the problem:
When the amp is turned on with the speaker connected to the left channel, the amp outputs a dc voltage and immediately goes into protection mode. It keeps on doing that until the amp is turned off.
The right channel does not give any output whatsoever.
Where should I start ?

Crown DC 300 A Series II ioc led help

As stated in the title I am in possession of a Crown DC 300 A Series II amplifier. My issue is the channel 1 ioc led comes on at power up, without any input or output hooked up to the amp. The amp seems to run fine input and output, mono or stereo. But the light is always on some time it will blink but again it doesn't matter if I am running signal through the amp or not, it always on. Any ideas?

I'm actually a Canadian living in Switzerland for the last 20 years.
I'm an IT Service Executive by day and an electronic technician by night (and weekends;-). I love fixing things and in particular vintage audio equipment which I am starting to collect. Although I use commercially available equipment in the house, I have built a number of Pre/PWR Amps, speakers, mixing consoles and so on in the past. I joined the forum to see whether I could broaden my learning and maybe even contribute to solving some issues. DiMC

Janky "fullrange" project

This took me the best parts of the last couple of afternoons, but i got it done.

Nothing terribly "hi-fi", just some noise-makers to serve as "surround" speakers, and/or alternative monitors to check mixes on :)

Technically, they are full-range, but one must consider the circumstances

Either way, some construction details and nice big photos can be found over on my blog, for whoever's at all interested. I won't blame you if you're not, though :D

Technics SE-A1 Power Amp - Repair help!

$

Hi All,

I'm struggling to repair my beloved Technics A1, as a few might know these are somewhat rare and little known about. I had this working well for years with only a dry joint on a diode giving me issues a while back (the failed joint caused the class A side on one channel to run at 15amps opposed to 7!) thankfully it was a relatively easy find and fix, if only by chance.

I now have issues with both channels, strangely one side the class A part is not working properly and the other channel it's the high voltage class B, I got this channel working with some new transistors that had been taken out but it soon failed again and I'm not sure the issue isn't the genuiness of the NEC 2SA1006B part I bought along with others.

Anyway I have managed to obtain probably the only set of schematics in existence for it, these were thought not to exist outside the factory so a lucky find! There's a lot of detail with them so invaluable for the repair but I'm looking for some help repairing it, it's rediculously complex and I'm at the extent of my electronics knowledge to get to the bottom of the issues.

Any help appreciated, perhaps there is someone UK based who has greater abilities than mine to look at it?

Testing p/s

I’m building a tube amp with separate driver board and b+ Transformers. Finished and tested the driver p/s. Trans spec is 115 vac in and 115 vac out. Then 150 vdc from the p/s. But getting only 105 vac from the trans and 145 vdc from the p/s. Since the test doesn’t involve a load or draw, is this to be expected?

DVM measurements of IXCP10M45S

Hi.
Can anyone take some resistance measurements of a properly working IXYS IXCP10m45s if possible?
I have bought 10 from ebay and 2 from a local supplier and all 12 of them do not work at all.
The 10 from ebay show a ~3,3 Mohm resistance between pins 1 and 3 (gate and source) and the 2 i bought locally show 177 to 169 ohms between gate and source.
I suspect that all of them are fakes, it looks like whatever i do i can't get a properly working part...
Don't waste your time if it is not convenient to take the measurements as i am almost 100% sure that i got fake or defect chips.
